Drift calculator

The Drift Calculator is an electronic tool used to estimate the position of a vessel or person in the water. It works by combining the set/current vector with the wind vector, using a method derived from the National Search & Rescue Manual.

This app does not replace AMSA’s official procedures but may provide a rescue vessel with a valuable head start on a search while waiting for AMSA to take over coordination.

Traditionally, this calculation was performed manually on a chart, which proved extremely difficult in the confined space of a small rescue vessel, particularly in rough seas.

As with any chart or electronic calculation, the accuracy of the result depends entirely on the quality of the information provided.

It doesn’t collect, retain or share any information. It doesn’t connect to the Internet. We’ve really tried to make it reliable, but accept no responsibility for any results from your use of it.

Download the app – Windows:

  • create a new folder C:\Users\Public\drift on your computer
  • click the link below. It will take you to Google Drive.
  • select the three files and right-click
  • select ‘download’. A .zip file will be downloaded
  • extract the files to the new folder
  • right-click SARdrift.exe and select ‘create shortcut’
  • drag ‘SARdrift.exe – Shortcut’ to desk top.
  • might have to ‘run as administrator’

  • click the link below. It will take you to Google Drive.
  • select SARdrift.apk and select ‘download’ from the dot menu beside file name
  • use Files on your phone to find it in ‘downloads’
  • select ‘instal’ from the dot menu beside file name
